Lymphocytes in the thymus of cattle and pigs were investigated for the expression of sheep erythrocyte rosette receptors on their surfaces. Mean values of 59.2% spontaneously rosetting thymocytes in cattle and 82.1% in pigs were established. Treatment of cattle lymphocytes with the metabolic inhibitors sodium cyanide and sodium azide, or the microfilament inhibitor cytochalasin B, demonstrated clear differences between thymocytes and thymus-derived peripheral blood lymphocytes. While rosette formation of peripheral blood lymphocytes were abolished almost completely in the concentrations used, there was little effect on thymocyte rosetting.
