Differential-diagnostic criteria of viral hepatitis A and B

Two groups of young patients suffering from viral serum hepatitis B and infectious hepatitis A were examined. An analysis of clinical and laboratory data showed that characteristics of infectious hepatitis included a high fever in the pre-icteric period, an acute onset of the latter, an improvement of the patients' state after the jaundice development, a milder course of the icteric period, a high level of IgM and a great increase of the thymol test indices. Typical characteristics for serum hepatitis were normal or subfebrile body temperature, arthralgias and urticarious rash in the pre-icteric period, a deterioration of the patients' emotion state, aggravation of symptoms as the jaundice progressed, normal or slightly changed indices of the thymol test and a long-time frequently lingering course of the disease.
