Peculiar type of filamentous inclusions in neuronal nuclei

An intranuclear inclusion in a neuron in the frontal cortex of a patient with tuberous sclerosis is presented. Its ultrastructural appearance suggests an intranuclear lattice. It is a slightly curved, elongated (3.4 .mu./0.33 .mu.) fibrillar structure. Its component elements seem to be oriented in a single direction forming sharp (approximately 25-30.degree.) angles with its long axis. Due to the incidence angle of the section one finds it hard to establish with certitude whether the component elements are exclusively filaments or tubules as well. The biological significance of the intranuclear rodlets and lattices is discussed.
