During an immunization campaign against smallpox in Ethiopia along its border with Djibouti, epidemiological information was also collected on malaria and schistosomiasis. Since the Ethiopian border district is under-equipped with medical and hygiene facilities, the population of the area is accustomed to go to clinics and hospitals in Djibouti. It is important to prevent the importation of malaria and schistosomiasis into Djibouti from these border regions, especially the focus of Kalo, since both diseases are at present absent from Djibouti (although their vectors still occur).
