Prenatal diagnosis of hemoglobinopathies and selected other hematologic diseases is now possible due to recent developments in molecular biology and biochemistry, combined with techniques for obtaining samples of fetal amniotic fibroblasts or fetal blood. Hemoglobinopathies, such as .beta.- and .alpha.-thalassemia and sickle cell disorders, are discussed along with disorders due to gene deletions or those associated with specific abnormal genetic material. Electrophoresis, autoradiography and column chromatography are methods discussed in this review.
