The causes of non-neoplastic gastrointestinal disease in Paraguay are reviewed with reference to the local literature. Incidence rates for megacolon due to Trypanosoma cruzi were estimated to be 1.9/100 000 for males and 0.55/100 000 for females. No cases were reported in children. Entamoeba histolytica infections were relatively uncommon (1.24/100 000) in 1975 compared with the incidence of helminthiasis (864/100 000). The causes of non-neoplastic gastrointestinal disease in Paraguay are reviewed with reference to the local literature. Helminthiasis is the most frequent gastrointestinal problem in South America. The incidence of intestinal helminthiasis in Paraguay for 1975 was 864/100 000; ancylostomiasis 520/100 000; ascariasis 190/100 000 and other helminths 381/100 000.
