Animal and clinical studies using a new operative approach with the Cavitron Ultrasonic Aspiration Device (CUSA) System in general surgery were very encouraging. This ultrasonically powered instrument was tested in the dog and baboon and was particularly useful in the liver, in mucosal stripping and in dividing muscle. It was successfully used to fulgurate a rectal cancer twice, to remove a villous adenoma and to perform a Commando operation. The ability of the CUSA System to reduce blood loss in various surgical procedures could have quite an economic impact.
