Patients (30) aged from 20-50 yr suffering from chronic uremia induced by different morbid renal conditions undergoing intermittent extracorporeal hemodialysis were submitted to a systematic study of the somatosensory system. Statistical methods were used to interpret the data. Latencies of P1, N1, P2 of SEP from median nerve stimulation were prolonged whereas the amplitudes of P1-N1 and N1-P2 complexes were consistently greater with the Welch t-Test in the uremic patients in comparison to those obtained in the age-matched control group. A highly significant finding with the same test, was the increase in intrahemispheric transmission of P1 and N1 in uremic patients in comparison to the control group. The constant increase both in latencies and amplitudes of SEP in chronic uremic patients and the frequent increase in transcallosal conduction could be accounted for either by the central influences of uremic conditions or by the interaction between large and small diameter fiber systems or, more critically, could depend on temporal summation.
