Maternal phenylketonuria: dietary treatment during pregnancy

Details are given of the treatment during pregnancy of a woman with phenylketonuria whose blood phenylalanine was controlled by diet starting at 18 weeks in the first pregnancy and at 12 weeks in the second. The first child has a normal range of intelligence, but has small stature, microcephaly, congenital heart disease and skeletal anomalies, attributed to the teratogenic effect of the high phenylalanine concentration in the mother's blood during early gestation. The second child is only mildly microcephalic, but development is normal.
