Encephalopathy in chronic renal failure appearing before the start of dialysis

Progressive encephalopathy characterized by speech difficulties, dyspraxia, multifocal seizures associated with a markedly abnormal EEG, focal neurologic signs and progressive dementia appeared in a patient with chronic renal failure managed conservatively for 7 yr. This syndrome has also been described in persons undergoing hemodialysis for chronic renal failure and has been termed dialysis dementia. The case report is presented. The symptom complex may be a primary complication of chronic renal failure and unrelated to long-term hemodialysis.
