.beta.-sitosterol and 6 sesquiterpene lactones were isolated and identified from X. macrocarpum leaves and roots. Five of the 6 lactones are xanthanolides (seco-4,5 guaianolides): xanthinine, xanthatine, xanthanol, isoxanthanol and xanthinosine. The 6th component was identified as xanthanodiene, an eremophilanolide isolated from a Japanese taxon of X. orientale.
