Studies on the brain nuclear histones of different species

The contents of brain nuclear histones in rabbit, guinea pig, adult rat and 10 day old rat are 3.84, 2.35, 2.94 and 0.31 mg/g fresh tissue, respectively, and the histone to DNA ratios are 7.00, 4.60, 6.68 and 2.38 in that order. The polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic patterns of histones from rat brain are more complex in nature than those of histones from the other species. Differences in electrophoreograms of nuclear histones from adult and immature rat brain are also observed.
