"Sprain of the wrist" is a precarious diagnosis. Although true ligamentous injuries do occur, it is important for the physician who first sees the patient to make a more specific and accurate diagnosis. In most instances, this can be done by locating the precise area of maximum tenderness and obtaining appropriate radiographs. Understanding the basic anatomy and biomechanics of the carpal bones and knowing the most likely diagnostic possibilities will permit recognition of these frequently overlooked injuries.
