The authors discuss various aspects of using banked human milk for feeding premature infants. They conclude that mothers of low birth wt. infants should feed their babies with their own carefully collected and stored fresh human milk. If the baby remains in hospital, the mother can freeze the expressed milk at home and arrange transport of samples on a regular basis. Supplementation with frozen, bacteriologically safe pre-term milk from a non-maternal donor is considered as an acceptable temporary procedure.
