A study was made in the USSR of the economic losses caused by massive attacks of blood-sucking and blood-imbibing flies (Stomoxys calcitrans (L.), Haematobia thirouxi titillans (Bez.) (Lyperosia titillans), Musca autumnalis Deg., M. larvipara Porch., M. tempestiva Fall., M. domestica L., Morellia hortorum (Fall.) and M. simplex Lw.) on dairy cattle. It was found that on a dairy farm the numbers of blood-sucking flies were higher and those of blood-imbibing flies lower than in pasture conditions. In a herd of 2000 stall-kept cattle, the loss amounted to 2517 roubles over a period of 3 months, whereas after the introduction of measures for control of synanthropic flies, the loss was reduced in the years 1973-1976 to 480, 166, 49 and 0 roubles, respectively.
