Infection rate and anemia in infancy in a Jerusalem community

Among 88 Jewish infants, mainly of lower-middle social class, born in Jerusalem there were on average 4.5 episodes of acute infection between birth and 9 months old. Mean ( plus or minus s.d.) haemoglobin value was 11.4 plus or minus 1.0 g/100 ml. The 4 infants with Hb less than 10 g/100 ml had on average 5.8 episodes of infection with 0.8 episode requiring admission to hospital and the 24 with Hb 12 g/100 ml or more had 4.5 episodes with 0.1 requiring hospital treatment.
