On density-dependent growth in a cyprinid, Phoxinus phoxinus L

Six groups of 1 yr old minnows were held in 60 l cages in a river for 61 days at densities of 60, 40 and 20 fish/cage, respectively. The fish fed only on food particles swimming actively or transported passively into the cages, which had walls made of 3 mm mesh net. Mortality was approximately equal in all cages except for 1 cage initially stocked with 60 fish. The mean length increments of the fish were slightly larger at lower stocking densities but the differences were not significant. Compared with wild minnows from the same river, all groups of cage-cultured fish grew significantly more slowly.
