The absolute osseous volume regularly diminishes throughout a lifetime; it is one of the phenomena of cellular senescence, due to the lack of necessary elements (calcium, proteins, phosphorus), and to decreasing osteoblastic activity. There are factors which accelerate this process of bone consumption; they can be costitutional factors, such as sex, race, and country of origin; or mechanical factors, such as forced immobilization, or insufficient muscular activity. Hormonal factors causing or accelerating osteoporosis are corticotherapy, hyperthyroidism, and lack of estrogens. Nutritional factors include a diet poor in calcium and in vitamin D.
