A compact hemodialyzer based upon the pleated membrane principle was constructed. All the materials used in this unit are indigenous except for the membrane support. A dry leak testing procedure using N gas and a special ethylene oxide sterilizer have been developed for this unit. The static volume on the blood side is almost 0 and the dynamic volume at 100 mm transmembrane pressure is 0.018 dm3. Narrow epoxy blocks are used on the blood and dialysate side to force the flow into the stack. With the useful membrane area of about 0.25 m2 maximum theoretical efficiency in terms of mass transport is attained under simulated conditions. This unit is ready for animal trials.
