About 5.5 million ha of New Zealand is potentially suitable for simultaneous production of protein from pasture plants and grazing ruminants. The extent to which partial extraction of protein from pasture modified the performance of animals fed the processed herbage (pressed pasture, PP) was studied in 5 experiments using 206 lactating cows. Cows offered fresh PP produced less milk ( less than or equal to 15%) of lower fat ( less than or equal to 0.28% units) and protein ( less than or equal to 0.17% units) content than their contemporaries offered fresh pasture (P). Intake and apparent digestibility of OM, gross energy and N were lower in PP than in P.
