A preliminary report of a Veterans Administration Cooperative study on surgical treatment of coronary arterial disease is criticized because of weaknesses in design as well as the poor surgical results. Results from experience with aortocoronary-artery bypass at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA are cited. Arguments are given against attempts to discredit the procedure.
