Use of a gelatin plasma substitute (Physiogel SRK) in the horse

The persistence and tolerance of an alkaline succylinated gelatin solution were studied in ten normal horses aged 7-16 years. Persistence after a 10-minute infusion was determined spectrophotometrically with serum hydroxyproline as indicator. Elimination from the blood as determined by serum hydroxyproline (initial range, 136-173 mu g/ml) was monitored, mean serum values falling to 22.8% of the initial (100%) value over 7 hours. Over the first 15 minutes, 20% was eliminated. The biological half-life in these normovolaemic horses was 11/2 hours, indicating a longer half-life in hypovolaemic horses. Except for one case of mild urticaria, allergic reactions, disturbed haemostasis, cardiac or circulatory failure and kidney damage were not observed.
