Components of mitochondrial respiratory chain appear to be oxidized during mouse tissue lyophilization. The free radical EPR signal with .DELTA.H .apprx. 8 Oe recorded in lyophilized tissue after its contact with humid air is due to ascorbate free radicals adsorbed on proteins. The molecular kinetics of these free radicals was determined to be proportional to H2O quantity in lyophilized tissue.
