Evaluation of the prednisolone primed glucose tolerance test in the detection of latent diabetes

The standard glucose tolerance test (SGTT) and prednisolone-primed glucose tolerance test (PPGTT) were made in 230 relatives of juvenile diabetics and in 211 controls with no family history of diabetes. All not showing a diabetic response with SGTT were subjected to PPGTT. In PPGTT those showing 2-h blood sugar of 140 mg/100 ml or more were considered positive reactors while others were considered negative. SGTT revealed diabetes in 14.3 and 0.5%, respectively. PPGTT revealed positive reactors in 23.4 and 1%. The significantly higher incidence of positive reactors in relatives of diabetics suggests that they have a greater potential for developing diabetes and that this potential increases with age.
