Type 1b glycogen storage disease is described in 2 children whose sensitivity to hypoglycaemia was restored by frequent feeds by mouth or by infusions. In the boy 3.5 years old accidental disconnection of the tubing between pump and nasogastric tube precipitated hypoglycaemia which remained undetected for an unknown period, up to 2.5 h, and treatment with glucose by mouth, and later by vein, did not prevent irreversible brain damage and death after 60 h.
