It is suggested that in western populations there is not a higher incidence among persons with high than with low sugar intake, of deficiency signs, caries, obesity or diabetes. Nor is there a study to show that persons reducing their sugar intake obtain benefit. Sugar is a relatively cheap energy source and if omitted from diet it would be replaced by increased intake of other foods, perhaps increasing the fat and protein intake. Health would improve significantly only if reduction of sugar intake were accompanied by reduction of intakes of fat and protein, especially of animal origin, and increases in intakes of fibrous foods.
