Peak gastric secretion stimulated with ICI pentagastrin given subcutaneously at 6 mu g/kg bodyweight was examined in 15 healthy young men at rest, during exercise for 1 h on a bicycle ergometer and during 1 h of restitution. The peak acid output (MAO) decreased significantly during restitution from 23.8 to 19.0 mEq HCl h. This decrease was caused by the fall in gastric juice volume as HCl concentration did not change. During physical exertion the concentrations of potassium and chloride were increased in gastric juice and the concentrations of the other electrolytes did not change significantly. During restitution the total secretion of sodium, potassium and magnesium decreased significantly. A significant increase in secretion and concentration of lactic acid was observed during exercise and restitution.
