Pseudomonas aeruginosa endocarditis and amyloidosis in an asthmatic patient

A 43 yr old asthmatic patient treated with prednisone is presented with a fatal case of P. aeruginosa endocarditis and amyloidosis. Initial cardiac catheterization reveals no specific pathology. Subsequent echocardiography and cerebral arteriography reveal both mitral valve vegetations and a brain abscess. Histological sections at autopsy correlate with multiple organ infarctions found at laparotomy, consistent with amyloidosis.
