Clinical manifestations of duodenal ulcer in relation with the age of the patients: comparison of a group of adolescents and a group of adults

An attempt was made to determine whether the clinical manifestations and course of duodenal ulcer were different in adolescent and adult patients. A group of 49 patients in whom the 1st clinical manifestation had occurred between 15 and 25 yr was compared to a group of 40 patients in whom the 1st clinical manifestation had occurred between 35 and 45 yr. All these patients were hospitalized. The ethnic origin, the prevalence of duodenal ulcer in parents or siblings, and the prevalence of high gastric acid output were not different in both groups of patients. The prevalence of blood group O were higher in the group of adolescent patients than in the group of adult patients. The prevalence of complications, including bleeding and perforation, was higher in the former than in the latter group. The prevalence of complications was not significantly related to the ethnic origin, chronic alcoholism or family history of ulcer. The prevalence of bleeding was higher in patients with blood group O than in those with other blood group. The risk of bleeding seems to be related to blood group O and not to the age of the patients.
