Pathology of the adrenal glands and paraganglia

Current knowledge of pathological changes in the adrenal glands and paraganglia of domestic animals is reviewed. The morphology of the glands in various species and the function of the different layers of the cortex are described. Cushing's disease, "stress" and the "general adaptation syndrome" as well as neoplasia and other changes are outlined. As well as primary tumours, metastases from those in other sites may lodge in the adrenals and lead to confusion in diagnosis. Apart from Cushing's syndrome clinical signs of adrenal disease are difficult to recognize.
