A six-year-old bitch, which had been treated with 100 mg sodium diphenylhydantoin twice daily for three years, was presented with a generalized gingivitis. All lower incisors and some upper teeth were abscessed. After unsuccessful antibiotic treatment a biopsy sample was taken. This showed collagenous fibres and inflammatory cells. On the basis of this and the medication history a diagnosis was made. All loose teeth were removed and those remaining were brushed once a day. Six months after treatment the hyperplasia was controlled. Had it been possible to remove the drug the hyperplasia would probably have disappeared.
