Carassius auratus gibelio occurs in nature in 2 forms: the usual bisexual diploid form and the gynogenetic monosexual triploid form. One pair of diploid goldfish and 1 triploid female were artificially bred in the laboratory, the eggs of the triploid female being inseminated by carp spermatozoa. The progeny were tested for their latency in swimming out of a 15 X 15 cm box in a tank. The standard deviation of the step-out latency was 3-10 times higher for the diploid progeny than for the gynogenetic fish, and from this it was concluded that step-out latency is genetically controlled.
