"The diabetes mellitus syndrome in the newborn"

In 9 cases of neonatal diabetes mellitus seen in 4 years the mean age of detection was 12.8 days and mean birthweight was 2.2 kg. Most were small-for-gestation infants. There was a preponderance of boys in the ratio of 2:1. Of the 9, 7 were associated with severe infections or a stressful condition and despite massive antibiotics and insulin, died. Only 2 were of the transient type and these had an uneventful recovery with no further recurrence. In 3 studied post mortem there was normal pancreatic tissue. The clinical features, course, associated conditions, investigations, pathophysiology and management are discussed in detail.
