Estimates of the incidence of cystic fibrosis in 69 papers published since 1960 ranged from 1:500 to 1:83 000 births. The variability of the estimates suggest that not all Caucasian populations have equal incidences of the disorder, as has sometimes been assumed. The meconium screening trials at present used are suitable only where the incidence is of the order of 1:2000 and would have to be improved where incidence is lower.
