The problems associated with the co-existence of animals and man in urban areas are discussed with special reference to those aspects of importance to veterinary public health, such as the spread of zoonoses, environmental pollution and social implications. Toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis and hydatid disease are included among the zoonoses listed.
