The ecology of parahemolytic vibrios, causal agents of food poisoning from marine products, was studied. Differentiation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus into the 2 biotypes V. parahaemolyticus and V. alginolyticus; their distribution in the world's oceans and seas; life cycle; favored habitat conditions; interrelationships with other microorganisms; their infestation of fish, mollusks, echinoderms and plankton; their enteropathogenicity in humans and rabbits and diseases caused in marine animals are discussed.
