Of the microbial agents isolated in culture from companion birds in a Washington practice, the most common fungi were Aspergillus, from the respiratory system, and yeasts. Haemophilus gallinarum was found in the oral and nasal cavity and in a case of conjunctivitis, and Scopulariopsis grew in cultures of feathers, skin and faeces of a cockatoo. Fungal infections of the feathers and skin can often be detected by faecal cultures, as birds tend to ingest fungal mycelia as they preen infected feathers.
