The structure and role of ceruloplasmin are described. An increased level of this enzyme in jaundice, allergies, rheumatism, viral hepatitis, Hodgkin's disease, metastatic hepatic tumors and unsuccessful pregnancy, and the possible value of ceruloplasmin determinations in clinical diagnosis are discussed. A number of variants in the ceruloplasmin system have been described. In investigations on the population of southern Poland no genetic differences were found. In quantitative investigations on serum of workers in a copper cable factory and of controls, no correlation between the time of exposure to Cu and ceruloplasmin level in the serum was found. Mean values of 31.6 mg/100 ml and 17.7 .mu.m/l were determined for ceruloplasmin and Cu, respectively. The correlation between the level of ceruloplasmin and Cu in human blood serum was confirmed.
