Long term follow-up of 73 patients with arteriovenous malformation of the brain who survived various surgical operations, revealed that 40 recovered without noticeable defects, 13 had mild neurological deficits, 10 needed continued medical care and 19 died. Of the operative procedures performed, complete or subtotal lesion resection gave the best long term results and ligation of the origin artery, simple evacuation of hematoma, biopsy and cranial decompression were less satisfactory. In intracerebral hematoma, although the operative procedure was easier to perform, recovery of neurological function was less satisfactory than in those without hematoma.
