Contagious equine metritis (CEM) in Ireland during 1977/78 is reviewed. Of 16 336 swabs from thoroughbred horses and less than 100 from non-thoroughbred animals, 51 thoroughbreds (49 mares, one stallion, one 2-year-old colt) but no non-thoroughbreds yielded Haemophilus equigenitalis. Of 12 barren and 5 in-foal mares found to be infected during the period between breeding seasons, 15 had been on Irish stud farms; 32 mares found to be infected after mating implicated two particular farms. The results of screening confirmed the effectiveness of recommendations by the Liaison Committee on Equine diseases for the prevention and control of CEM.
