The influence of chronic and acute application of ethyl alcohol on the behavior of alkaline phosphatase (AP), gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase [GGTP] and aminotransferases of the blood and liver in the rat was studied. Histochemical investigations showed a considerable decrease of AP activity in biliary ducts and the appearance of hepatocyte activity in the acute experiment. During the chronic experiment, the reaction in the biliary ducts gradually increased. The histochemical GGTP reaction after an initial decrease showed, on prolonging the experiment, an increase in the biliary ducts and in the hepatocytes. Biochemical investigations showed AP activity increase in homogenized liver samples. No substantial changes in GGTP activity or aminotransferase were found in serum and liver.
