Experimental production of identical twins in the mouse

Superovulated mouse ova were collected at the 8- to 16- cell stage. After removal of the zona pellucida, the embryos were cut in half using a Leitz micromanipulator. Some of the halved embryos were cultured in vitro for 72 h, by which time 84% had reached the blastocyst stage. 40 pairs of ova which had originally been halved were transferred to recipient females ; 16 pairs of normal identical twins were born. 14 pairs reached sexual maturity, and their reproductive performance was normal.
