Since the early observations of Sir Percival Pott and the strong occupational associations established between environmental exposure and the appearance of human malignancy, investigators have been aware of the impact of external stimuli on orderly cell replication. More recent epidemiologic and experimental observations have produced firm evidence of the response of genitourinary tissues to carcinogenic influences. The problem of carcinogenesis in the genitourinary organ systems is examined. The topics discussed are: normal cellular control mechanisms, theories of carcinogenesis, chemical carcinogens, irradiation-induced carcinogenesis, viral carcinogenesis, viruses and human tumors, renal adenocarcinoma, bladder carcinogenesis and prostatic carcinogenesis.
