Nylon film, a vehicle for enzyme and pentobarbital release, acts as a barrier to hydrophilic compounds and ions. An ionizable compound was incorporated into the film which became more permeable to counter ions with which ion pairs can be formed. Palmitic acid was incorporated in the film and the permeability to a quaternary ammonium compound was increased. The permeability was pH dependent; at higher pH values, when palmitic acid is ionized, the penetration of quaternary ammonium ions is increased. The film was prepared by a spraying technique and its thickness monitored by .beta.-ray absorbance. The transfer phenomena were studied spectrophotometrically by a continuous method.
