A survey was carried out in Muheza, Tanga and Korogwe districts to find out the causes of underdosing with chloroquine in the treatment of malaria, as this may result in failure to eliminate parasitaemia. There was more underdosing with injectable preparations than with oral preparations. Confusion in relating drug specification on the label to the "wording" used in prescription was found to be the main cause of underdosing with injectable chloroquine. Other causes of underdosing were scarcity of chloroquine in the dispensaries.
