Studies are reviewed on changes in the immunological reactivity of bodies of humans and animals effected by prolonged or excessive administration of antibiotics, and objective methods of determining the level of reactivity are reviewed. Determination of the phagocytic activity and alkaline phosphatase levels of blood leukocytes, phagocytic activity of the RES, opsonin titer in the blood serum, lysozymes and their determination with photometric methods and diffusion in agar, bactericide activity of the blood serum, complement titer, determination of C-reactive protein and hemagglutinin are discussed. Uses of Staphylococcus albus as test organisms are cited.
