The coccobacillus associated with CEM was grown on chocolated media prepared from tryptose blood agar. Growth of colonies was more rapid when sodium sulphite and L-cystine were added to the media. The organism grew on Eugon agar containing 25 mu g/ml of recrystallized haemin in the absence of blood, a characteristic of some members of the Haemophilus genus.
