Membrane potential of the host cell in the process of viral interaction with the cell

Membrane potential (MP) dynamics of human maso pharynegeal carcinoma KB cells infected with Coxsackievirus B-1 (100 plaque-forming units/cell) was studied at different temperatures. A decrease in the MP of the cells infected with viruses occurred at 4.degree. C and 18.degree. C; the formation of the peak in the MP occurred only at 37.degree. C. The decrease in the MP of KB cells probably occurred in the course of the virus adsorption on the cell surface and the virus penetration into the cell. The subsequent stages of the virus-cell interaction (disintegration of the viral particles and changes in the cell connected with it) caused a short-term reversible increase in the membrane potential. The dynamics of MP of the intact KB cells and those infected with Coxsakievirus B-1 differed.
