Ischemic colitis and stricture after hemolytic-uremic syndrome

A child who continued to have intermittent intestinal obstruction and diarrhea until surgical removal of a segment of colon almost 7 mo after the onset of HUS is presented. The intravascular coagulation in the mesenteric vasculature and the microangiopathy may have been severe enough to produce ischemic damage to the colon and to result eventually in scarring and stricture. Findings compatible with ischemic stricture are present in this case. Ischemic colitis with subsequent stricture may be added to the list of late complications of the HUS and should be considered in the event of persistent gastrointestinal disturbance beyond the acute phase of the disease.
