A study on the diagnostic usefulness of radioallergosorbent test (RAST) in allergy

In order to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the radioallergosorbent test (RAST) in the diagnosis of house-dust allergy, the author compared the results of RAST with those of the bronchial provocation test (BPT) and intracutaneous skin test in 37 asthmatics and 3 non-asthmatics aged 9 to 15 years in studies in Taiwan. There was a 100% positive agreement between RAST and the skin test, and 66.7 to 83.3% between RAST and BPT. RAST was, therefore, considered to be a safe reliable and convenient alternative to BPT and the skin test. The data strongly suggested that the house-dust mite Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes was one of the antigens in house-dust extracts.
